Guide | Study: Essential Oils During Labor May Help Reduce Anxiety and Pain

As essential oils have become more widely used, their potential benefits during pregnancy and childbirth have drawn increasing attention. Recent research suggests that certain oils may help ease anxiety and pain during labor and create a calmer environment. Experts advise pregnant women to consult a doctor before choosing essential oils to ensure safe use.

Essential oils and labor

Essential oils capture plants' natural aromas and are used in aromatherapy to promote physical and mental relaxation, easing tension and discomfort during labor. Common oils include lavender, clary sage, and ylang-ylang. Lavender and clary sage may strengthen uterine contractions and support labor progression, while ylang-ylang may reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and relax muscles.

Using essential oils during labor

Aromatherapy generally uses small amounts of diffused or sprayed essential oil. Studies suggest that a light rose-and-lavender spray on a pillow or in the room may help the laboring patient relax and perceive less pain. Peppermint oil may relieve muscle pain and nasal congestion associated with tension and headaches.

Research also suggests that essential oils after delivery may improve sleep. In a study of 158 postpartum mothers, those who used lavender oil had significantly better sleep than those who did not, which may help them cope with pain and fatigue after childbirth.

Safety precautions

Although essential oils may be soothing, experts advise avoiding high concentrations, direct skin application, and oral use during pregnancy. Start with one drop and gradually increase to 3 to 5 drops to prevent discomfort from an overpowering scent. Essential oils should always be used under medical guidance during pregnancy.
