The Mass General Difference

Massachusetts General Hospital was founded to care for Boston's sick, regardless of socioeconomic status, and to become the first teaching hospital of Harvard University's new medical school. By fostering a culture of collaboration and education, advancing the boundaries of medical research, and maintaining a steadfast commitment to the diverse communities we serve, we remain at the forefront of medicine.

We believe diversity makes us stronger, inclusion honors our communities, and a strong focus on equity enables us to serve, heal, educate, and innovate at the highest level. Our priority is the health of patients near and far. Working as one team, we remain focused on providing every patient with high-quality, compassionate care.

World-Class Patient Care

Mass General is consistently ranked among the nation's leading hospitals by U.S. News & World Report. Its recognition in 13 specialties reflects the breadth and depth of our expertise. Patients rate their experiences highly, and nearly all say they are likely to recommend us to others. We also consistently receive strong ratings from professional organizations. Our recognitions include:

American Nurses Credentialing Center recognition for excellence in Magnet® hospital nursing

Society of Thoracic Surgeons recognition for excellence in cardiothoracic surgery

The Joint Commission recognition for excellence in stroke care and Comprehensive Stroke Center certification

An “A” grade for quality and safety from The Leapfrog Group in 2019

Mass General is a research leader with a research enterprise of more than $1 billion and the largest hospital-based research program by NIH funding. Our research spans more than 30 clinical departments and centers. Approximately 1,200 clinical trials are underway at Mass General at any given time. Our research drives discoveries and breakthroughs in basic and clinical science that lead to new and improved treatments for patients locally and globally. From January through December 2019, Mass General researchers led the Nature Index list of healthcare organizations by publishing more articles in high-impact journals than any other U.S. hospital.

Mass General patients have access to a large network of physicians, nearly all Harvard Medical School faculty members and many leaders in their fields. Our multidisciplinary care teams are known worldwide for innovation in cancer, digestive disorders, neuroscience, heart disease, orthopedics, transplantation, urologic conditions, and trauma care. They bring specialists from across the hospital together to provide comprehensive, state-of-the-art care. MassGeneral Hospital for Children also offers a full range of pediatric healthcare, from primary care to advanced treatment for complex and rare conditions.

Setting Standards for Quality and Safety

Safety, effectiveness, patient-centeredness, timeliness, efficiency, and equity—the six principles established by the Health and Medicine Division of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine—form the foundation of Mass General's approach to quality and safety. We measure performance, set ambitious goals, and track progress to sustain excellence. We compare our performance with local and national benchmarks in key quality and safety areas to ensure the highest-quality and safest care.

A Harvard Medical School Teaching Hospital

Mass General is not only Harvard Medical School's original teaching hospital but also its largest, and nearly all our active physicians serve on the faculty. We are committed to training and mentoring the next generation of international leaders in science and medicine, with opportunities for physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals. These talented people bring diverse skills and perspectives that generate fresh, innovative ideas for patient care.

Serving Our Neighbors Locally and Globally

Mass General was founded to serve our neighbors and people in need, and that commitment is as strong today as it was two centuries ago; only the meaning of “neighbor” has changed. Our community now extends far beyond Boston. We partner with communities close to home and across oceans to establish, improve, and sustain healthcare services and advance the health and well-being of those who live and work there.

I have been coming to this hospital for more than thirty years and highly recommend it. There is no need to go elsewhere for tests because everything is available here. The restaurant offers a wide variety of food, and the cafeteria is open 24 hours, making it convenient to eat while in the emergency room. The service is first-rate, and all the staff are very kind.

Just want to take a moment to review our experience at MGH labor and delivery. We were visiting Boston from out of town. My daughter was advised, from her OB/GYN, to go to the nearest ED after describing symptoms that were out of the norm. We were immediately received with kindness and compassion. She was quickly seen and monitored. The women in the labor and delivery unit were lovely. Jen, Mary, and Suzanne went above and beyond to make my daughter feel safe and comfortable throughout her time there. Kudos to these three individuals as well as everyone else we encountered. We are grateful!

I previously saw Dr. Foreman at the metabolic clinic. From the beginning, I had unpleasant interactions with her administrative staff. Nearly all my blood test results were lost, and I had to track them down myself. The staff were inefficient and rude. I complained to both the doctor and the patient advocacy office. The final straw was a carotid ultrasound ordered by Dr. Foreman; I did not receive the results for nearly six months, and the doctor had not reviewed them. This nearly led to a serious problem. They told me there was an issue with my pituitary gland. I was very disappointed and left the clinic to seek a second opinion at a pituitary specialty clinic. That doctor completely rejected Dr. Foreman's diagnosis. After reviewing my blood test results, he told me that a medication Dr. Foreman had said was ineffective was actually working. Ultimately, I lost trust in both doctors. I now receive care elsewhere. I would not return even for a hangnail!

Words cannot express my gratitude to Massachusetts General Hospital. They saved my daughter's life. She has a very rare autoimmune disease, and the medical team at MGH was outstanding and began treatment immediately. I will always be grateful for all the care they gave her and the ongoing care she will need. Thank you!

Where do I begin? First, I must honestly say that I consider this one of the best hospitals in the country. However, my experience tonight was bizarre and disappointing. Here is what happened. My daughter was in a car accident. Boston police called my wife and me, explained the accident, and said she was at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). The officer could not provide many details. We rushed from Providence to Boston to see her. On arrival, we were told only one person could accompany her. In such a critical situation, they allowed only one parent to receive information. The room was easily large enough for two people. While my wife had to process everything the doctor said alone, I could only pace anxiously in the waiting room, worried about my daughter. When the doctor entered to give an update, was one parent really expected to bear that stress alone? Truly sad and disappointing.

They allow employees to post extremely disturbing videos on social media. Registered nurse Christina should be fired if she has not been already. She publicly threatened violence against patients who come to this hospital.

I went there last year and simply want to thank the amazing doctors and nurses who saved my life. I will always be grateful. God bless you.

Had a really disappointing experience with MGH after my wife gave birth (normal delivery, no complications, 2-day stay) and received a bill over $40k with a $4200 deductible. Couple Friends who work with me with same health insurance and coverage had a much better deal at BMC (
    Mar 13, 2026
I was told my bill was under review and on hold after I canceled my payment plan and stopped making payments. Yet only one or two weeks later, a collection agency called me about it! My insurer also denied several claims because the hospital failed to submit the required documents, and the hospital then billed me. My daughter's bill was not identified as hers but as mine. A few days after canceling the payment plan, I suddenly received a bill for my daughter's examination, already in collections. They had previously said the bill would not go to collections because it was on hold. This hospital is extortionate!

I was shocked by this experience. My son was supposed to be transferred to another hospital, but they could not provide any information about the new facility and seemed surprised by my questions. They then canceled the transfer entirely even though I had explicitly asked them not to, delaying my son's treatment. This hospital is dirty, disorganized, and poorly managed. I absolutely do not recommend it.

I had an urgent appointment at Lynn Medical Center today. The clinical staff were outstanding from start to finish, and I have never felt more at ease. Happy Thanksgiving to my care team and family!

My husband, Joe Serrao, has Crohn’s disease and went to the emergency department with a bowel obstruction. He was in severe pain while nurses walked past as though nothing was wrong. I cried and pleaded for help, but they did not respond for two hours. His physician performed surgery and repeated procedures, requiring continual follow-up. After the last procedure, which was supposed to close his stoma, he was not told that he would still have an ostomy bag and pass stool rectally. The emergency department was frightening, with people moved into hallways. I cannot tolerate that place.

If I could, I would give zero stars. I received care at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) throughout my pregnancy and was considered high risk for several reasons. I had early signs of preeclampsia and signs of preterm labor at 36 weeks and 4 days. Although they knew I was high risk, they sent me home when I was already 5 centimeters dilated! I live 50 minutes from the hospital, and the staff knew this. This was also my second child, so labor would typically progress faster. The nurses were extremely rude and arrogant. Because I did not appear to be in much pain and my labor had slowed for 2.5 hours, they forced me to leave. It was absurd. I ultimately had to deliver at a hospital near my home, where I had not wanted to go. I gave birth 13 hours after they discharged me. I was told my baby might not have survived if I had delivered at home or if anything else had gone wrong. I had a placental abruption. Mothers, you know your body better than these doctors do!

Dr. Neil Barr, neurogastroenterologist, is the best! I trust his judgment completely! Pat Cardoso

I went there because of a knee injury. They said I had walked too much and could rest in the ER because I had nowhere else to go until the next day. Security then kept harassing me until the security supervisor assaulted me. He pushed me against the door and then forced me outside. I decided to let it go, found somewhere to sit, and zipped my bag. I then discovered that another bag inside it had been searched. Arthur's hospital will only scam you, steal from you, or hurt you.

This is a five-star hospital. Our entire family cannot express enough gratitude to the staff, nurses, and doctors for treating our mother with exceptional care and respect. Within minutes of each arrival, nurses and doctors greeted us warmly. Whether or not we were there, they cared for her attentively. We believe their compassionate care and professionalism helped our mother recover so quickly. We will always be grateful to Massachusetts General Hospital. Angels work there.

If I could give zero stars, I would. Even with a referral, they repeatedly lose the referral records. It took a year to get an appointment, which was supposed to be today. MyChart showed that I had prepaid over $1,000. They knew the doctor would be away from the clinic for at least a week, yet waited until the Friday before my Monday morning appointment to call and cancel it. I live out of state. The hotel was booked, time off work was arranged, and everything was planned. Another specialist familiar with my condition was also unavailable, but I could see a new doctor in 2026. Now they have to investigate whether the prepayment can be refunded, but no one seems to know how. After not answering the phone today, Patient Relations replied to a message saying it usually takes at least 7 business days, even though I was shown no courtesy throughout this process. Patients should be cautious. I will update or change this review if the situation is resolved more appropriately.

This happened in 2020 and still affects me every day. I saw a gynecologist after a life-threatening pregnancy. They refused to let my husband hold my hand until I fought back. They never told me how painful it would be, offered no pain relief, and did not even ask whether about 10 students could attend. It was only a uterine biopsy. It was the most painful experience of my life, and I still break down from the psychological trauma. At my most painful moment, 13 people stared as I fell apart and sobbed. If I had known how deeply this would traumatize me even five years later, I would not have let the pregnancy take my life from me. I hate this nightmare and how much it torments me, and all I can do is write this. If you need a gynecologist, do not go here. Heed this warning and protect yourself, because I could not protect myself 💔

It is already 2025, and Mass General is still conducting inhumane experiments on animals—drilling into monkeys' brains. If your research is so necessary and justified to save human lives, do it on actual humans. Would you find 100 people every day and drill into their brains? No? Not even to supposedly save humanity? You are only doing this to advance your careers. How do you sleep at night?

Sept 1st 2018, I had a brain aneurysm rupture and was med flighted from Laconia NH. I had collapsed twice walking out of my bathroom so my 12 year old daughter called 911. Thank God she was still awake at 1:30 am or I wouldn't be here. Laconia EMTS treated me terribly and thought I overdosed. The two men kept telling me multiple times that I need to "stand up" as I was crying on my kitchen floor curled up in a ball holding my head. Laconia EMTs kept asking me how much heroin I took and told me we weren't leaving till I told them how much. My son said "My mom doesn't do drugs". The EMTs snickered and said "yeah ok". I knew I was going to die in front of my children so I used every single ounce of strength that I had to get on the gourney. Yes, two men that easily had well over 50 pounds on me if not more, wouldn't place me on the gurney to get moving. My whole stay at Mass General (all 17 days) was great. I was brought ice cream at 1 am when I couldn't sleep. Since I was bedridden, one nurse "Grace" even washed my hair while I was laying in the bed. She even tried to get the knots out of my hair. She was incredible and such a sweet, caring girl. I was moved up from the ICU to the floor above after 15 days, I was told I'd have more freedom without being hooked up to all the machines. I thought that meant I could go get a soda. I was stopped at the elevators and told I couldn't go off the floor. The woman at the desk who stopped me went out of her way and brought a soda to my room. This hospital and its staff are incredible. They saved my life as most people die before reaching the hospital. I'm incredibly grateful to be alive and the hospital staff made my ENTIRE stay more comfortable. I can't thank you all enough for all you have done for me. Only complaint is one of the social workers. Not the one with the short curly hair..but the other one. She was so rude to my dad. Dr. Mazwi and Dorothy Booth are the most incredible people out there. Much love to you both! Because of you two...I'm still around for my children who need me.

I visited this hospital's spine department with Dr. Şençak. Unfortunately, I do not recommend him at all. His diagnostic skills were poor, he was uncooperative, and he did not understand the case. He made an incorrect diagnosis. I ask hospital management to replace this physician with a highly skilled doctor because this is considered an international hospital.

I just had surgery for kidney cancer and was amazed by the level of service and kindness I received. From the helpful person at the information desk when I first arrived to all the doctors, nurses, and attendants, everyone provided compassionate care, understanding, and assistance before, during, and after my surgery. Thank you to my surgeon, Dr. Wang, and all the other doctors, nurses, nutrition staff, and attendants. Thank you.

I would leave 0 stars if I could. This hospital failed my mother and put her in danger. Any healthcare professional would have recognized that she was a danger to herself and should have been sectioned. The hospital should have called us if she left. We spoke with several nurses who assured us they would call if she did. She was under their care in room Bigelow 1422A from May 14 to 15, 2023. She was supposed to remain at MGH for several days but was unfortunately discharged on the morning of May 15. There was no call or notification. The next day, May 16, 2023, she was found dead outside Wellington train station; it was also her birthday. Thank you, MGH, for your negligence. I can do nothing about it unless I go to probate court. This organization should be ashamed of itself and how it treats patients. It does not have their best interests at heart and simply rushes them out the door. I will tell everyone I know to avoid this hospital and its affiliates. Horrible, unforgivable, and inhumane.

This was the worst experience of my life. I had severe tooth pain, and they took 6 hours to see me, only to tell me they could not help. Worst hospital, January 29, 2025.

Kathy Finni, RN, in the emergency department fast track was wonderful! She was patient and professional and smiled at all our silly jokes! If you read this, please let her know, and recognize her nursing director, Melissa Quiñones, for having such an excellent employee!

Dr. Husseini is an excellent cardiac surgeon. She is professional, very thorough, easy to communicate with, and most importantly, compassionate toward patients and their families. I would recommend her. Thank you for everything you have done, and thank you to your medical team. Well done, Dr. Husseini, and God bless you!

Massachusetts General Hospital is by far the most incompetent institution I have ever dealt with.
    Feb 10, 2025
Great doctors and staff, although some employees are rude and arrogant. That alone does not represent the entire hospital. Unless it is an emergency, I strongly recommend avoiding busy times. I once waited 4 hours in the emergency room.
