Experts recommend sleeping on the left side during pregnancy. Preliminary research associates this position with a lower risk of stillbirth in late pregnancy and suggests it may be better for fetal health than sleeping on the back or right side. Lying on the back may compress blood vessels around the uterus, restrict blood flow, and contribute to low birth weight or other complications. Left-side sleeping may also improve gastroesophageal reflux, ease heartburn, and support digestion during pregnancy.


However, not everyone is used to sleeping on their side. As weight increases and joint loading changes during pregnancy, many women develop neck, shoulder, lower-back, or hip pain when side-sleeping. Pregnancy pillows are designed to provide stable support for the abdomen, back, neck, knees, and other key areas, helping prevent joints from collapsing or twisting because of poor positioning and thereby reducing pain and improving sleep.


Unlike several ordinary pillows stacked together, a pregnancy pillow retains its shape, is less likely to shift, and follows the abdominal curve to provide more even support as the body changes. Some users describe it as being “hugged to sleep” and find it comfortable even when they are not pregnant.


Main types of pregnancy pillows:

Wedge Pillow: The smallest type, offering flexible, targeted support for the abdomen or lower back.


Total Body Pillow: The largest type, usually U- or C-shaped, supporting the body from head to toe and often replacing a regular head pillow.

If you turn frequently at night, a U-shaped pillow does not need to be repositioned with each movement;


If you already have a preferred neck pillow, choose a style that works with it;


If you tend to perspire, consider the pillowcase material and washability;


For twin pregnancies, an adjustable support pillow can accommodate abdominal growth.


Experts note that pregnancy pillows can remain useful after birth, whether supporting the arms during breastfeeding or helping the mother maintain a comfortable position during recovery.
